This is an LG 5300 mobile phone:

It's a reasonable phone- not expensive, has polyphonic ringtones, colour screen, GPRS, has a data cable included in the box. There is another model very similar to this one- the G5300i. The little 'i' on the end means that it supports Java and MMS.

The two phones are so similar that many people have successfully flashed the G5300 with the firmware from the G5300i. Why would anyone do this? Because it would enable the G5300 to run Java and it to support MMS messages.

This added functionality does come with a cost. Firstly, if you use the LG contents bank to load wallpapers you will find that the phone now puts an ugly white border around the picture. The second problem is that you lose the ability to disable the network operator text. (ie: the network operator name covers up the wallpaper...)

As with many things, there are partial solutions for these problems. You might notice in the photo above that there is no operator logo on the main screen. Also, there is only a very small border around the wallpaper- and I might be able to get rid of it entirely if I think about it a little harder. If I do, I'll update this to reflect it.

So, if you have a G5300 and want to try converting it to a G5300i - or if you have a G5300i and you want to remove the operator logo and the white border - then perhaps there is some information here for you.

Warning! If you choose to follow the information presented here, you face a very real possibility of breaking your phone, your agreement with your network operator, your warranty, and who knows what else. The information is for educational purposes only and I don't recommend for anyone to follow this information.

If you have a question and it's not listed here then I do not know the answer. No, I don't know how to unlock your phone. Please do not ask as I will not reply. Ask your phone provider.

Remove the operator logo on a G5300i

How to flash a G5300 / G5300i.

It's late.. I'm tired. I will add complete details on how to add a wallpaper without the border later. For now, if you're interested, here's one way to do it that I found posted by 'altt' in these forums (reprinted without permission):

1. Create your wallpaper as 128x90 pixels
2. Upload it to tagtag.com (or any other site you can get to via WAP)
3. Using the phone, download the picture and save it as your wallpaper.

I'm going to suggest that 128x96 is probably the perfect fit, but I've not tried it.
